Entrance Examination for studying Art
Anyone wishing to study art as part of a teacher training programme at a university of education in Baden-Württemberg must complete what is known as an ‘aptitude assessment procedure’. Put simply, this means that you will meet with other prospective students in our studios and carry out practical work, sometimes on your own and sometimes in a team or in pairs. This also gives you the chance to get to know other prospective students. In addition, there will be interviews with members of staff at the institute.
These sessions are held twice a year in the same week at all teacher training colleges in Baden-Württemberg; in Karlsruhe, the next one will take place on
Friday 27 November 2026 from 2:00 pm to approximately 6:00 pm in the art studios at the Karlsruhe University of Education, Building 3, 3rd floor, Room 319.
In addition to the practical work and the interview, the third part involves a portfolio of your own work. Your portfolio should contain 10 signed pieces of your own artistic work, 5 of which should be drawings. The other works should come from other artistic fields, such as painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, design, etc. Simply document sculptural works or performances photographically!
The certificate confirming that you have passed the ‘aptitude assessment’ is valid at all teacher training colleges in Baden-Württemberg, not just at the PH Karlsruhe.
Tip: Discuss your portfolio with your art teacher as early as possible. As an art expert, they can offer useful advice on which pieces to include in the portfolio, which ones you could work on further, and which ones are still missing.
Portfolio advice
The Institute of Art offers portfolio advice for prospective students. In small groups, we look at the applicants’ artwork together, identify similar and differing approaches, and draw inspiration from one another. During the on-site discussions, representatives from the student union are always present to provide feedback from their perspective. In this way, everyone contributes, shares their work and offers advice to one another. Along the way, prospective students get to know the Institute of Art’s facilities, people and atmosphere. All interested parties are warmly invited!
