Entrance Examination for studying Music

In accordance with the joint statutes of the teacher training colleges in Baden-Württemberg on the implementation of a pilot scheme to assess artistic aptitude in the subject of music, dated 5 Enrolment on a teacher training programme in music will no longer be conditional upon passing a specific entrance examination as a prerequisite for admission from the summer semester of 2024 onwards.

Instead, you must submit a letter of motivation alongside your application to study. In this letter, you should explain why you wish to study music education and why you are aiming to become a music teacher. You should upload this letter – in accordance with the relevant application deadline – as part of your application via our e-portal. Once you have commenced your studies with us, your artistic aptitude will be assessed during the course of your first semester. During a ‘Come together’ session as part of the first semester’s orientation week, you will demonstrate your practical musical skills. Based on your letter of motivation and the ‘Come together’ session, you will have a one-to-one interview with a representative of the degree programme. This interview forms the basis for the further development of your practical skills in the subject.

At the end of the first semester, all students submit a portfolio to the teaching staff in which they reflect on their musical and pedagogical development. The lecturers consult with one another regarding the performance and development they have observed, taking the portfolio into account. The first semester concludes with a meeting between lecturers and students, during which the students’ strengths and potential for development are discussed.
