jessie beier: Tender Circuits: Scores for Artificial Intimacies

This one-day workshop engages participants in prototyping alternative pedagogies that critically and creatively explore the entanglements of computation, care, and contemporary art education. Drawing from conceptual art strategies such as scores, prompts, and performative instructions, participants will collaboratively create and enact a series of lo-fi instructional artworks that foreground aesthetic, political, and material questions about teaching and learning in an age of artificial intimacies.
Building on the legacy of both instructional and algorithmic art, the workshop reimagines curriculum as score and pedagogy as collective performance. Here, instructions operate not as fixed lesson plans but as machinic propositions (after Deleuze & Guattari, 1987) that call for open-ended, iterative, and generative forms of thinking and making together. By experimenting with instructions that can be interpreted, misread, and enacted in unpredictable ways, participants will not only embody algorithmic feedback loops but also critically probe the limits of automation, translation, and control. In this sense, the workshop mobilizes “tender circuits” as a figure for care: fragile, recursive, and open to interruption—yet capable of sustaining solidarities built from sometimes unlikely alliances.
For educators, the workshop aims to provide tools to move beyond simply talking about AI toward thinking with, through, and against AI as a condition of contemporary pedagogy. Educators will leave with a collaboratively generated set of instructional artworks, ideas for rethinking lesson planning through score-based exercises, and new perspectives on how care, intimacy, and collectivity might be re-circuited in an age of artificial intimacy.
jessie beier is an artist, philosopher, and conjurer of weird pedagogies for unthought futures. Her research brings educational theory into dialogue with media theory, feminist science and technology studies, energy humanities, machine learning, and extinction studies to speculate otherwise on pedagogical possibility in an era of ecological catastrophe. Her artistic practice—often deploying sound, video, digital/analogue technologies—stages speculative scenarios that center pedagogies aimed at collective practices of refusal and fabulation. She is Assistant Professor of Art Education at Concordia University (Montreal) and author of Pedagogy at the End of the World: Weird Pedagogies for Unthought Educational Futures (Palgrave MacMillan, 2023).

Dieser Workshop findet im Rahmen des Fellowships des Care Research Lab (CRL) statt. Das CRL wird gemeinsam von der Universität zu Köln und der Pädagogischen Hochschule Karlsruhe betrieben und lädt internationale Expert*innen ein, sich mit spezifischen Fragen und Fallstudien im Bereich von Care auseinanderzusetzen. Organisiert wird das Fellowship im WiSe 2025 durch die Professur Ästhetische Bildung und Kunstvermittlung an der Pädagogischen Hochschule Karlsruhe, Prof. Dr. Konstanze Schütze.
