Abstract:

Self-testing (or retrieval practice) - the retrieval of information from memory - has shown considerable promise in supporting student learning and self-regulation in a variety of academic domains and tasks. However, more evidence is needed on its use in authentic educational settings, as such settings present unique challenges (e.g., lack of student motivation to practice and heterogeneous intervention effects for low vs. high achieving students). Accordingly, this talk will present field studies on students' spontaneous or incentivized use of retrieval practice in authentic educational contexts and how it relates to students' exam performance. A focus will be on the heterogeneity of online self-tests and potential transfer effects to unpracticed mathematical content.
